Writing Helps

Vocabulary is not just about knowing more & more words. One should realize the power of vocabulary. For me its a tool. A tool that you can keep expanding in 'N' no. of dimensions to make it more & more handy. I guess the likes of intangible things like imagination, knowledge & vocabulary only get better with expanding dimensions. If you want to be successful you need to express. Vocabulary helps you not just to let the other person know what you mean, but also to express them effectively. If the other person doesn't understand your vocabulary then it will only motiviate him to learn more. Ask me how, I am one among those who are motivated thus.

One of the best ways of developing your vocabulary is Writing. When you speak you may just use some words to make your listeners understand what you wanted to mean. But when you write, you just not have one or two but as many no. of chances to improvise your expression. You have the scope to learn words instantaneously and use them on fly and when good critics read them, they can suggest you some better words too.

I have always wanted to improve my vocabulary. Once I used to read dictionary, use babylon translator, etc., to continuously learn new english words & know more synonyms. But all this before a long long time. Recently my learning has been stagnate. I seems to me that it has taken a shape of freezed water for it only breaks but neither flows freely nor expands. I have started again. Not just learning new words, but I will be putting them in use. And you ask me how? Ask Cepheus :)

You forgot another equally good way to improve vocabulary: "Reading".
For writing purposes, a good thesaurus along with a good dictionary would be useful.
