A defeat teaches you more than a victory does

Today, I reached finals in our org's pool tournament. I played well to lead 2-1 and just when I was about to win it 3-1, I did a stupid defensive act which resulted in my loss of championship 2-3 to my opponent, a deserving winner.

There are times risks ought to be taken. There are times caution is required. But risk with caution often wins. And when you have the advantage of a lead, and presented with an opportunity, you better go for the kill. I displayed this attitude in quarter-finals to make it to semis, did it again in semis to reach the final. But, when it mattered the most, my mind displayed a shadow of weakness and I missed the limelight.

I have learnt a lot of things by playing a tournament like this. This helped me in many competitive ways for I have learnt a lot of lessons from my wins & defeats.

  • You have half-won the match, if your opponents fear you.
  • In a game, skill is just 20%. Rest is all mind. Patience is the key.
  • One at a time. One after the other. Don't bog your mind by too many targets.
  • Planning is very important. But don't stick to it so much that you fail to see a better opportunity that comes on the way. Watch it! Keep your mind open, always.
  • Luck will not win you everything. But it can certainly create great opportunities. Rest is in your hands.
  • When you have the advantage, go for the kill but with caution. There is a thin line between being aggressive and being rash.
  • Play to win. But accept defeats. A defeat teaches you more than a victory does.

When you have the gift, use it!

Today I accidentally opened my own story "The Legend of Cepheus", and I felt like reading the last episode after I found that there were some new comments to it. So I did and I was thrilled. Honestly speaking, I never looked back at the story after I penned it and even after the comments and reviews from its followers and my friends. But when I did today, I went back into the imagination that drove me wild in writing that bloody, gory last battle, the adrenaline involved, the emotional content before the very end and I was living it again. I mean, I know I am not a great and seasoned writer but I should honestly say, probably, I enjoyed the story the same way as its readers did! That really made me rethink about the writing skills that I have but not so well employed these days. I got the gift I believe. I got the imagination it takes to produce such pieces of art. I should put them to test. Shouldn't I?

What use when you cannot use the god given gifts. God gave me the voice. God gave me the dexterity. God gave me the brains. Its my turn now, to make full use of them.

Engage the gift. Reap the fruits.

Live The Moment

No. This is no Ritz ad. This is what I feel, in retrospect, of my days of schooling & college. I feel, I missed a lot when I attended my school. I feel, I should have studied well & hard and should not have forgotten all those basics of physics. I feel, I should have remembered all those significant episodes in Indian history. I feel, I could have done better in computer algorithms & data structures in my college. Why? I did not know how I would miss it today. I was busy playing games & had fun. Nothing wrong in it. But nothing right in not doing what I was supposed to do either - Study! If only, I had given the time each subject deserves, probably I would have been more knowledgeable today. Yes. I have learnt it. One should do the right thing, at the right time, in the right place.

Yesterday is a history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift. That's why, its called present. So, Live the moment.

Focus. Concentrate. Execute.

When I play pool game, one thing that I have noticed quite often is that, when I talk less during the game, I play well. Once I start speaking, plans are exchanged with my fellow partners and spectators. I am instructed by everyone around some piece of their idea. Just like the way I do when others play their shot! You tend to get to analytical mode, become a critic of each shot played. Now there is the problem. More energy is spent in this thought process than the actual task in hand: WHAT SHOT TO PLAY? HOW TO PLAY? WHAT NEXT? Thoughts are scattered. Focus is lost. Shot fails. I am left frustrated. End result is that I might lose the game. Angered. Disappointed. Laugh at myself. All depending on my mood. Not that I hate to lose, but I don't like to lose a game that I have in hand! No one does!

When you are executing something with an idea, stop listening to others. If you want to listen, then stop executing. Take a break. Listen. Decide. Then - Execute.

What if people keep talking when you are playing? You have to stop listening. Simply difficult. But that's the game! Focus.

During execution, don't worry about the result. That's one big distraction. Internal distractions are as troublesome as the external ones. Fear of losing or worrying about mistakes makes even a strong one weaker. One shot at a time. Concentrate.

Lessons learnt may be from a game. But aren't these applicable to everything you do?
Indeed. Cutoff the external disturbances - TURN YOUR FOCUS INWARDS, subdue internal commotion - CONCENTRATE ON THE PRESENT TASK, and play the shot - EXECUTE!

Unmasked

Love is divine, Love the divine,
Me and my heart shall be the shrine.
Will will come, from the mind of mine,
when my mind and soul, together they interwine.

Living in delusion, Alas! I have been,
with a clouded mind, and the truth unseen.
You waken me up, thank you O Lord!
bless me the Will, it will be my sword.

I will try to take off the mask,
difficult yes! but not an impossible task.
Gracious will be the way, I live,
for I have a pure & sublime love, to give.

The Ten Commandments for a Peaceful Mind

  • Reduce the amount of time you read the newspapers or watch the news on TV.
  • Stay away from negative conversations and from negative people.
  • Don't hold grudges. Learn to forget and forgive. Nurturing ill feelings and grievances hurts you and causes lack of sleep.
  • Don't be jealous of others. Being jealous means that you have low self-esteem and consider yourself inferior to others. This again, causes lack of inner peace.
  • Accept what cannot be changed. This saves a lot of time, energy and worries.
  • Every day we face numerous inconveniences, irritations and situations that are beyond our control. Try to solve them or simply accept them cheerfully.
  • Learn to be more patient and tolerant with people and events.
  • Don't take everything too personally. Some emotional and mental detachment, ability to think and judge impartially and logically, is required.
  • Let bygones be gone. Forget the past and concentrate on the present moment. There is no need to evoke unpleasant memories and immerse yourself in them.
  • Practice some concentration exercises. This will help you to reject unpleasant thoughts and worries that steal away your peace of mind.

Music

Ok... I have got some time finally! And as the subject says, its about Music this time. Everyone knows music. Everyone loves music. So what is it that I have to say more about it?

Well... Many of my friends have asked me to teach them singing. Though, I have never taught anyone so far, I have tried to give them all an overview of music to give them a foundation of music theory and I would like to share the same here. Since, I have not much knowledge of western music (I don't know all that major note - minor note terminology), I'll use Indian Classical Music (ICM) as my language here. My language to explain the science behind music. I'll try to explain whatever I want to, in a Q&A fashion.

Q: What is Music?
A: Wikipedia defines music as an art consisting of sound & silence expressed through time. Music is an art. But, its a science too. Its a science comprising sounds & mathematics in an artistic way to please human ears. Everything that you hear is sound which is characterized by its frequency, wave length, amplitude etc. The main characteristic of a sound note is its frequency. As per ICM, there are saptha (7) swara's - Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha & Ni. There are 2 variations of Re, Ga, Ma, Dha & Ni notes. So that totally makes its 12 notes from Sa till Ni. The notes Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha & Ni are all relative to Sa. Where you start your Sa is determined by the pitch (Shruthi) that you decide to sing in.

Q: What about the frequencies that come in between these notes? Why aren't they considered?
A: To a human ear, some frequencies are quite indistinguishable. Lets say Sa is at 140 Hz and Re is at 145 Hz. There are frequencies in between which are perceived by a normal ear and categorizes it either as Sa or Re. Simply put, these frequency differences, as heard, are negligible. To exemplify, we all hear songs on computer. We hear both .wav and .mp3 files. A .wav file size is huge compared to a .mp3 file. This is simply because in an mp3 encoding, the number of representable frequencies are less and any other frequencies are approximated to nearest representable frequency. But we don't see any difference in the songs we hear irrespective of their encoding formats. So, approximation holds the key.

Q: Why is it that another Sa follows Ni and the whole notes runs in cycles?
A: The SA(top one) that comes after Ni is nothing but equals the frequency obtained when you double the frequency of the Sa(bottom one). Its a cycle of notes with the frequencies getting doubled every cycle. We call it Octaves.

Q: Singers talk about this.. "Pitch". What is it?
A: Pitch is nothing but the frequency that you choose to render the note Sa. A singer's voice is normally capable of rendering 2 octaves. An octave mean 8 notes. Usually, pitch is chosen in such a way that we start from say Pa0 which runs till top Pa2 (Pa1 in the center). This is because, typically, our songs are tuned in such a way that it doesn't have notes beyond top Pa or below base Pa. Some songs may have more higher notes but not lower notes in case of which, singers just choose an appropriate pitch.

Q: What is a Raaga?
A: Raaga is nothing but a protocol. A protocol that is built using permutation and combination of the notes. A Raaga is made by notes from the selections which involves: variants of Re, Ga, Ma, Dha & Ni and inclusion or exclusion of Pa. Sa is mandatory and fixed. A Raaga is characterized by ascending and descending notes. A typical example: Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni, SA is ascending and SA, Ni, Dha, Pa, Ma, Ga, Ri, Sa is descending. Ascending notes and descending notes may be different. Western music calls Raagas as "Scales" - pentatonic scale etc.

Q: What is Taal?
A: It's a Rhythmical cycle of beats (like a Meter).

The End

He was watching a movie in a multiplex along with his friend. The movie was about to finish. Suddenly he felt so light and he raised from his place and went out. The door keeper was there guarding the exit. He gave a big smile while moving out but the door keeper was expressionless. It was weird. And then outside, there were many people waiting to enter.

He thought he was attractive that day but no one looked at him even despite the odd timing of his coming out of the theater. He was confused. Then he saw a beautiful girl there. She was all alone. But very charming and was sitting alone in a corner. He stood in front of a poster and started staring at her. It was visibly clear that she was looking towards him. He just kept looking at her and she wasn't uncomfortable at all.

Suddenly he remembered that he had come out instead of watching the movie climax. He didn't know why he did so. He tried to go back to the theater but it was too late by then. Movie was over. That apart, the door keeper was still there but didn't really care that he was entering the theater from the exit door that too after the movie was over. And everyone got off their seats and started coming out though none of them really blocked his way. And then he saw something which he couldn't believe. He was shocked. He saw himself there in his seat still & his friend was trying to wake him up. And moments later, his friend held him and wept as others watched in disbelief. Then he understood why things were so different.

Nava Grahas - The 9 Heavenly Bodies?

"AdityAyacha SomAya MangalAya BudhAyacha Guru Shukra Shanibyescha Rahavey Kethavey Namo Namaha"

The above sanskrit stotram (a prayer) is something which has been for ages. This is also based on the concept of Nava Grahas (9 celestial bodies) as per Hindu philosophy. You will know shortly why I have stated the above prayer.

Recently the news that scientists have discovered 3 new planets Ceres, Charon & UB313 which may belong to our solar system has been in headline in many channels yesterday morning. You may read more about it here. When one of the news channel made their news saying "Eclipse to Nava Grahas", I was upset in the morning. Again in the evening, I found that channel interviewing many a comman man with each one giving his idea about the discovery, some finding fault in the concept of Nava Grahas, some blindly denying the discovery by saying Nava Grahas means 9 planets and that is it and bla bla bla... yet none really manifesting the idea of Nava Grahas. I was more upset. The reason? Simple. No one really seems to know what Nava Grahas are!!! Added to that, a foolish media makes a riduculous headline.

First off, Nava Grahas are not about the nine planets of our solar system. The Nava Grahas include the Sun & the Moon and doesn't consider Earth, Uranus, Neptune & Pluto of our solar system. The Rahu & Ketu of the Nava Grahas are the ascending & descending lunar nodes. Now that may be confusing to some. Let me eloberate a bit. The concept of Nava Grahas, as per hindu philosophy, only states about the heavenly bodies in our solar system and their movements which influence creatures on this Earth - mostly human beings. So these astronomical bodies of Solar System are stated to be Sun, Moon, Mecury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Ascending & Descending Lunar nodes. (A fact common to all nava grahas is that they have relative movement with respect to the backgound of fixed stars in the zodiac belt).

So why only the above 9? Let me give an example. Why are there more tides on a full moon day? Our 8th class text book would teach us that this is due to gravity of the moon! So Science accepts the fact that moon has an impact on water on the earth. That sounds great to me. Since moon is not biased like us and treats all objects alike, I think its acceptable to assume that moon has similar impacts on other objects on the Earth.

Now, what is the size of the Moon compared to Sun? I assume that you all know how much more the Sun's gravitational pull is. So, though the Sun is far, it has its effect on us. After all Earth revolves around the Sun. What about Mercury, Venus, Mars & Jupiter. Can they all have their impact on us? The influence that I am talking about can actually be related (experimentally) to the formula which defines the force of attraction between any 2 bodies: F=G*m1*m2/r*r, where 'G' is the Newton's gravitational constant, 'm1' & 'm2' are masses while 'r' is the distance between the 2 objects. So, scientifically speaking the impact is proportioinal to the mass & inversly proportional to the distance of the planet from our world. Since Uranus, Neptune & Pluto are relatively farther, I think we can consider their influence on us to be negligible! Now you may ask me about Ceres (current 5th planet in our solar system) that is nearer than Jupiter. I would say "Look at its size". Its smaller than Mercury.

Coming back to Nava Grahas, I think I have made it clear, what actually these Nava Grahas are. Nava Grahas only defines about the movements of some celestial bodies of our solar system which influence our body & mind. I will leave it here for you to think about this and understand, but will continue a little about a related topic: The scientists who proposed the theory of Nava Grahas. Theories based on some facts. Facts which I think they are, but are called as myths by some. Myths, for those who cannot accept the facts. The concept of Nava Grahas has been for ages (millions of years they say) when there were no telescopes, satellites or flying machines. Then who perceived the Nava Grahas? The Answer: Rishis or Maharshis (SEERS) who can see anything & everything irrespective of time & space and with no bounds. To give an example, we all must have heard about Telepathy. In telepathy, the media is nature. The nature gives us the signals which we seek if we can tune our minds and make them capable of it. For a mind of that sort with no limitations, which can see the space above & below with time being no exemption and to which nature itself bows. This greatness belonged to them, the Rishis, who delivered the Vedas which comprises the Hindu philosophy.

So what if our solar system has a dozen planets?

Writing Helps

Vocabulary is not just about knowing more & more words. One should realize the power of vocabulary. For me its a tool. A tool that you can keep expanding in 'N' no. of dimensions to make it more & more handy. I guess the likes of intangible things like imagination, knowledge & vocabulary only get better with expanding dimensions. If you want to be successful you need to express. Vocabulary helps you not just to let the other person know what you mean, but also to express them effectively. If the other person doesn't understand your vocabulary then it will only motiviate him to learn more. Ask me how, I am one among those who are motivated thus.

One of the best ways of developing your vocabulary is Writing. When you speak you may just use some words to make your listeners understand what you wanted to mean. But when you write, you just not have one or two but as many no. of chances to improvise your expression. You have the scope to learn words instantaneously and use them on fly and when good critics read them, they can suggest you some better words too.

I have always wanted to improve my vocabulary. Once I used to read dictionary, use babylon translator, etc., to continuously learn new english words & know more synonyms. But all this before a long long time. Recently my learning has been stagnate. I seems to me that it has taken a shape of freezed water for it only breaks but neither flows freely nor expands. I have started again. Not just learning new words, but I will be putting them in use. And you ask me how? Ask Cepheus :)

Creative!

Being Creative doesn't merely help anyone to be called 'Creative'.
There should be some creative acts, creative works or creative ideas to present to the world to let them know what you are. You are me here. Yes. I am speaking about myself.

How many in this world know how creative I am? My family knows me since they have heard my self composed songs, my paintings & some not so bad poetry since my childhood days. My close friends know all these. They have seen me doing some audio/video editing stuff to bring in novel things out of the lurid blues. At work, I believe that some of my office collegues think that I am creative because of the kind of solutions I give to the problems we face or how fast I imagine how things should look like!! Who else?

I am not just saying that people should know how much creative I am. My concern here is that,
I am not what I was. I want to be what I was in terms of creative works.
Those days of zeal in imagination & doing creative works is not present now. I am sure that is not gone. I want to live that life where I feel full & satisfied after each creative work that I finished.

And this day, a new life begins.

Modern Saint?

Well, I think, a saint is a person who is considered holi & respected as he's sacred. A Saint transforms holiness in him to the people around through his wise preachings and holi virtues & thoughts!

Then what makes me a saint? I sing Annamacharya songs, songs which are considered to be divine enchanted spells that give ultimate pleasure of feeling god. Feeling god in you, around you and in every part of life. So does singing those songs make me a saint? Never. But when I sing, I try to bless the same sublime feeling of divinity & manifestation of god which I experience when I sing those songs to my audience. So I call myself a Saint for this reason though it may not be apt or for that matter of fact, I don't deserve such a great addressing.

I value our customs, our traditions and principles, bow to some superstitions. But, I look like a guy of modern era to the people around me. I speak fashionable things. I make fun to be amiable. I dress modern. I tend to have a build of a model! An aggressive, nXt generation sort of guy. So I think I am modern. ;)

From outside, I am Modern B-)
But from inside, I am Saint like :) (at times)

Yes. I am THE MODERN SAINT.

Who is a Poet?

A poet is not one who uses his literature to write verses
A poet is one who uses his feelings to fill empty spaces

A Thought

Today morning I was telling my friend not to worry about a subject. I was saying that dont feel that the problem is big which makes it even bigger ;) This lead to a very good thought. A thought provoking thought.

A Sailor sails in his ship & covers the breadth of the seas. Seldom cares how deep they are. His goal is to travel across. A Diver, on the other hand, travels vertically touching down the sublime limits of the sea. He jumps in the sea & tries to touch down. His exploration is in depths.

On the same lines, one can attain knowledge in breadth, more like a technologist who tries to know as many things as possible with out which the very essence of calling him a technologist would be in vain or in depth like a researcher who selects a particular domain & tries to gain immense knowledge in that science.

A technologist is more like a sailor whilst a researcher, a diver.

I m feeling a bit happy that after a long long time, I have thought something which makes some sense. ;)

Good Night

My Mind

Mind is a wonderful instrument. I call it an instrument because its in the hands of the beholder to use it the way he wants. Its powers are unlimited and this can only be realized by regularly excercising it, training the brain the way you want it to be like. Call it meditation or whatever.

Its imaginations are simply incredible. I love my mind for its creativity and ability to imagine anything that can bring solace to me anytime. At the same time, the same mind scares me by the kind of phobias it has, the kind of pessimistic thoughts it generates, & sins it makes in its thoughts. Its my worst curse, I feel at times, which makes me dejected.

Two extemistic ends of my mind are they. Too wonderful, Too petrifying. Too Bold, Too Coward. Meditation will surely help me but I am lazy for almost every good thing. But an article that I read yesterday of Alex Stepanov addressing Programmers had motivated me enough, I believe, to start of doing useful things which will improve my knowledge and the capabilities of my mind.

Lets see.. Whats the Final Destination of my MIND !!!
